How to Grow Nepenthes alata — Care Guide for TC Plantlets

About Nepenthes alata

Nepenthes alata is a variable lowland-to-intermediate Pitcher Plant endemic to the Philippines. It’s prized for its tall, elegantly elongated pitchers and forgiving nature — one of the best species for newcomers to the genus.

Light

Bright indirect to moderate direct light. 12,000–25,000 lux. Tolerates more sun than most Nepenthes. Grow lights work well at 14 hr photoperiod.

Temperature

Day: 25–32 °C | Night: 18–22 °C. A true lowland-to-intermediate — comfortable at Indian room temperatures year-round in most regions.

Humidity

50–80% RH. More tolerant of low humidity than highland species. Good airflow is important.

Water

RO, distilled, or rainwater only. Keep media moist but never waterlogged. Low-tray method works well.

Potting Mix

50% perlite + 30% coco coir + 20% orchid bark. Free-draining. Avoid peat in warm climates as it can stay too wet.

Acclimatising Your TC Plantlet

Same protocol as other TC Nepenthes: 2–3 weeks in a humid propagator, slowly open to ambient. Feed pitchers dilute insect prey (fruit flies or crushed mealworm) only after fully established.

Common Problems

  • Leggy growth: Increase light.
  • Yellowing leaves: Often overwatering or mineral buildup in media.
  • Flat, unpitchered leaves: Humidity too low or plant stressed during acclimatisation.
